Christmas Holidays in Havelock North

Christmas in Havelock North was all about children doing creative things, delicious food including whitebait fritters cooked on the barbie, and strange duck-like creatures.

So many of the old houses in central Wellington have disappeared. But some (ie centre bottom) are holding out. The building bottom right shows evidence of earthquake proofing.

Havana Bar and Coffee Works

When in Wellington I visited Havana Bar and Coffeeworks where they roast their own fairtrade brand of coffee. Top left are nearby billboards advertising Havana coffee and the two bottom images are posters and a mural inside the bar. I really liked the heater suspended over the beach scene.

Media Circus

The current show at Thermostat Gallery is the Rayner Brothers' 'Media Circus'. These images just gives a little taste, but there are some darkly humourous pieces which you'll have to visit in person to experience.

Stink Magnetic Anniversary

Stink Magnetic recording company have just put on three great nights of band line-ups in Whanganui to celebrate their ten-year anniversary. Top left is Dylan handing out awards for various categories including 'Builders Crack' award (being received top right). The ghost is doing accompanying drum rolls. I just caught a couple of performances: Goldenaxe (different setting, just as good) and Slim Chance.

Ross Mitchell-Anyon launch

Ross Mitchell-Anyon launched a new exhibition space here in Whanganui alongside his studio where a firing was taking place. There were lots of beautiful ceramics on display as well as some purchases being put to immediate use. Goldenaxe performed for the gathering.

This was once a shop which caught fire, and was then demolished.

Te Aurere visits Whanganui

This week Te Aurere travelled up the Whanganui River and anchored just before the bridge. This waka is made from two kauri trees and all the joints are lashed together using traditional Polynesian methods. To track her voyages, visit the Te Aurere web page.
