turrets and stilts
There are some great old houses from the turn of the century in Houston, TX, and all the houses along the waterfront on Galveston Island are built on stilts to withstand floods.

Beautiful! You make me want to visit Houston! I've been there before but only briefly... I didn't have enough time to look around.
